You will choose three techniques of advertising and create a poster, notebook or PowerPoint demonstrating how those techniques are used, analyzing specific ads that are examples of those techniques in use. You must include copies of the ads which you are analyzing.
For each technique, you should write an organized paragraph, using the technique as a title. You should introduce the technique in the topic sentence, provide some explanation, and then analyze the use of that technique in the ad to create a desire to purchase a product or take other action. Make specific reference to the ad in question. For example, if you are looking at the use of a celebrity endorsement, why that celebrity? What specific association does he or she bring to the product as opposed to another celebrity?
Here are some steps to take to complete this successfully:
1. Right away, start assembling magazines and other sources of ads, or look for interesting ads in public that you can photograph and decide whether you will use them later.
2. Take notes on the techniques we discuss in class and how one might analyze them in ads.
3. As you come across those techniques and have a strong understanding of them, look for ads that demonstrate each technique. Part of the assessment will be the appropriateness of the choices you make, so take your time and look around.
4. Write a first draft of each analysis paragraph. Check it for content, organization and language.
5. Assemble your poster, notebook or PowerPoint in a neat and orderly manner.
